St. Thomas Aquinas Scholarship for 8th Grade Students at Area Catholic Churches

Attending a Catholic high school can make a world of difference. According to the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), Catholic high school students have a 99% chance of graduating. At John Paul II Catholic High School, we are proud that every one of our graduates has been accepted to college.

To bring these opportunities to as many deserving students as possible, John Paul II Catholic High School is offering scholarships with the goal of helping motivated and deserving 8th grade students from area Catholic churches offset the cost of a Catholic high school education, and reap its benefits for the rest of their lives.

Scholarship Information

Two 8th grade students at each of the area Catholic churches will be selected.
Applications will be evaluated based on demonstrated financial need, academic performance, evidence of leadership capability, and service/volunteerism.
Scholarship amount is $6,500 per year for 4 years.

Recipient Expectations

Annual tuition is currently $7,800. Recipient families will be responsible each year for the difference in tuition (currently $1,300), registration fee (currently $200), and academic materials fee (currently $400). Fees are due at the end of each February; tuition payments can be made monthly.
To retain the scholarship each year, recipients must maintain a 2.75 GPA at the end of each year.
Parents/Guardians of scholarship recipients are asked to participate in Family Association meetings and activities and annually contribute service to the school.

Selection Process
The following items are required to apply:

application
current middle school transcript
7th grade mathematics and reading comprehension EOG scores (if applicable)
essay (submitted with your application, see below for details)
three recommendations
FACTS Grant & Aid Financial Needs Assessment

Submissions that do not include all items listed above will not be reviewed by the scholarship committee. Upon review of applications, the scholarship committee will select the top three students from each school to participate in an interview in mid-March. Finalists will also take the High School Placement Test (HSPT).

Application Deadline
Completed applications must be submitted no later than Friday, March 23, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

Notification Date
Students chosen for the scholarship will be notified in April.

Essay Information
Criteria:

minimum of 1,000 words but no more than 2,000 words
typed, double spaced, and paginated
essays will be judged on content, grammar, and clarity
must be submitted electronically (uploaded with your scholarship application)

Choose any ONE of the following and write an essay meeting the above criteria.

What life experiences have shaped who you are today and what challenges have you overcome in achieving your education (i.e. financial, personal, medical, etc.)?
Explain why you believe education is more than information.
Explain how respect and humility are indispensable aspects of your education.
Describe an event in which you took a leadership role and what you learned about yourself.
