Local Coordinator Needed for International Students

A local coordinator for international students from Global Horizons can be anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • A qualified teacher with the ability to take on additional responsibilities.
  • A school or organization staff member who is willing to dedicate time and effort to this role.
  • An active parent in the school community who is passionate about supporting young people.
  • An enthusiastic individual within the community who has a genuine concern for the well-being of young people.
  • Someone who demonstrates empathy, good judgment, and the ability to handle crisis situations effectively.
  • A person with charisma who can build positive relationships and effectively communicate with others.

Ultimately, the role of a local coordinator requires someone who is dedicated, caring, and capable of fulfilling the responsibilities involved.

The local coordinator manual elaborates on the responsibilities of a local coordinator and their importance and gives a picture of host family protocol, which is partially listed below.

  1. Pre-Departure Orientation: Before the student departs for their academic program, Global Horizons conducts a thorough orientation session for them and their natural parents. This orientation covers essential information such as program expectations, cultural adjustments, academic requirements, and emergency procedures. It helps students and their parents feel well-prepared and confident about the experience. (This is done in the student’s country by the Global Horizons team.)
  2. Pre-Arrival Training to the Host Family During a Home Visit: Prior to the student’s arrival, facilitated by the local coordinator. Global Horizons also provides a comprehensive orientation to the host family. This orientation allows the host family to understand the cultural background and expectations of the student. Global Horizons provides guidance on topics such as communication, house rules, dietary preferences, and any specific needs or preferences the student may have. This orientation helps the host family create a welcoming and supportive environment for the student’s arrival. (Done by the local coordinator.)
  1. Bi-Monthly Reports: These reports will document and capture the interactions between the host family, the student, and the local coordinator. Through these reports, Global Horizons will be able to assess any areas of concern that need attention and determine how they can best support the student and the host family. The reports will provide insights into the student’s social, emotional, and academic integration as well as their achievements, allowing Global Horizons to celebrate their progress.
  1. Conflict Resolution and Prevention: Global Horizons understands that conflicts may arise between the students and host families due to cultural differences or other factors. Their organization provides guidance and resources to both parties to help prevent conflicts from escalating. In case a conflict does arise, Global Horizons has a dedicated team that will mediate and provide solutions to ensure a harmonious living environment.

These support measures are implemented to ensure that the students and host families have a positive and enriching experience throughout the academic year. Global Horizons considers it vital to have a proactive line of communication with our school to ensure we all know and agree when some hard decisions have to be made.

Having a local coordinator in our area or the school community plays a significant role. The local coordinator will walk the host family through the vetting process as listed below through those links.
